Plutôt que de raconter les colonisations d'un seul point de vue (celui de la métropole ou celui de la colonie devenue indépendante), Ann Laura Stoler et Frederick Cooper proposent en effet de les englober dans une histoire des empires qui permet d'étudier ensemble, dans leurs interactions réciproques, les dominants et les dominés. Les colonies n'étaient pas des espaces vierges qu'il suffisait de modeler à l'image de l'Europe ou d'exploiter selon ses intérêts ou ses désirs ; et les Etats européens n'étaient pas des entités autonomes qui, à un moment de leur histoire se sont projetés outre-mer.Les unes et les autres se sont mutuellement construits. Un livre capital pour tous ceux que passionnent les sociétés coloniales.
